University collaborations in digital heritage, archaeology and interpretation
AVIMMERSE works alongside universities on teaching, research adjacent activity and public engagement, particularly where archaeology, heritage and digital interpretation intersect.
Our practice sits between disciplines, supporting interdisciplinary teaching and engagement.
We work with archaeologists, historians, heritage professionals and educators to explore how places, landscapes and material culture can be interpreted through digital and spatial media, without losing academic rigour or contextual depth.

This is not consultancy in the commercial sense, and not formal academic research. It is
practice led approach that supports teaching, research conversations and public facing work within institutional contexts.
What collaboration can look like
University collaborations take a number of forms, depending on departmental needs, teaching programmes and research interests.

Typical formats include:

-
Guest lectures and teaching sessions.
-
Practice informed workshops and short courses.
-
Digital heritage pilots and prototypes.
-
Support for public engagement and impact activity.
-
Research adjacent technical and interpretive input.
-
Student engagement, placements and project support.
Work is shaped collaboratively and framed to sit comfortably within university structures, timelines and expectations.
Areas of focus
Our work most often supports activity in and around:

-
Digital heritage and interpretation.
-
Archaeology and landscape storytelling.
-
Immersive and spatial media.
-
Community engagement and public history.
-
Practice led and research adjacent enquiry.
These themes reflect ongoing projects and long term investigations, rather than fixed service lines.
ACADEMIC
APPROACH
Experience and context
Alongside project work, we regularly contribute to teaching, workshops and knowledge exchange activity, and have worked in collaboration with heritage bodies, museums and public sector partners.

This includes supporting interdisciplinary conversations between archaeology, heritage, design and technology, and helping translate complex research ideas into accessible, place based digital interpretation.

We are comfortable working within academic environments and understand the importance of clarity around roles, scope and contribution.

Examples of related work and collaborative projects can be found in the Case Studies.
Current and emerging work
Alongside commissioned projects, we are developing a long running body of practice led heritage work exploring castles, landscapes and place based narratives.

This includes sustained investigation, writing and digital documentation, which increasingly feeds into conversations around interpretation, engagement and future research possibilities.

This work is intended to sit alongside, not replace, formal academic research.
Conversations and next steps
If you are working within a university context and would like to explore teaching, research adjacent or engagement collaboration, we are always happy to have an initial conversation.
