Virtual Reality Training for New Medical Professionals

The Client

PatientCareSim was developed in collaboration with medical academics and healthcare professionals to explore how immersive technology could support clinical training and decision-making. The project focused on the use of Virtual Reality to simulate realistic patient interactions, allowing learners to practise diagnostic reasoning and communication skills in a safe, controlled environment.

The work drew on extensive experience in medical education and healthcare training, with an emphasis on scenarios commonly encountered by early-career medical professionals.

PORTFOLIO

The Project

AVIMMERSE worked closely with clinicians and educators to design immersive training simulations for Virtual Reality that could be used as part of medical teaching programmes.

The aim was to move beyond passive learning and enable students to actively engage with clinical scenarios, practising observation, communication, and reasoning without risk to real patients.

The project explored the use of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, voice recognition, and patient avatars, to create responsive training environments that reflect the complexity of real-world healthcare settings.

What We Did

Following an initial discovery phase, AVIMMERSE supported the project from concept development through to implementation. This included defining the learning objectives, designing the simulation environments, and shaping the overall user experience.

Drawing on prior experience in immersive training simulations, we guided the design, testing, and delivery of two medical training scenarios, ensuring they aligned with educational goals and clinical practice.

The final simulations were designed to be intuitive, engaging, and adaptable for use within broader healthcare training programmes.

The Objectives

  • Create realistic patient avatars using high-resolution scanned models.

  • Develop custom animations to support clinical examination and interaction.

  • Integrate voice input and AI-driven responses to enable natural dialogue.

  • Design a simulated clinical environment suitable for training scenarios.

  • Build a clear, accessible user interface for learners.

  • Apply lighting and sound design to support immersion and focus.

Pancreatitis Simulation

This Virtual Reality experience places users in the role of a clinician tasked with examining and diagnosing a patient presenting with symptoms of pancreatitis.

Learners interact directly with the patient avatar, using voice-based input to ask questions and guide the consultation. Artificial intelligence is used to trigger appropriate responses, gestures, and animations, helping simulate a realistic clinical interaction.

The experience encourages users to practise structured questioning, observation, and clinical reasoning, with feedback provided throughout the simulation.

SALT (Speech and Language Therapy) Simulation

A second simulation focused on speech and language therapy, allowing users to assess and interact with a patient presenting communication challenges.

The system uses voice recognition to interpret the user’s speech, triggering relevant responses from the patient avatar. Visual text feedback supports clarity and learning, helping users reflect on both the questions asked and the patient’s responses.

This scenario was designed to support training in communication-focused clinical practice, where nuance, empathy, and clarity are essential.

This project forms part of AVIMMERSE’s broader work in immersive training simulations, exploring how XR technologies can be used to support learning in safety-critical and professional environments.

If you’re exploring how immersive technology could be applied to healthcare training, education, or simulation-based learning, we’d be happy to talk.
