Start Your Church Story
A gentle, practical way to uncover and share the story of your church.
Your church holds centuries of faith, history, and community memory. Yet for visitors and even local residents, it is not always easy to understand what makes a particular church special, or why it matters today.
The Church Story Starter is a free resource designed to help churches begin uncovering, shaping, and sharing their story in a way that feels respectful, accessible, and rooted in their values.

There is no technical requirement, no pressure to “go digital”, and no expectation beyond taking the first step.

Why church stories matter
Stories help people understand not just what a church is, but why it exists.
For many churches, taking time to reflect on their story becomes a way to:
-
Deepen connection with the local community.
-
Help visitors feel welcome and informed.
-
Support mission and outreach.
-
Strengthen the foundations of heritage and funding bids.
The Church Story Starter is designed to help you begin this process at your own pace.

A practical example
At St Elphin’s Church in Warrington, a focus on story, place, and local history helped shape a programme of heritage activity that welcomed more than 250 visitors during Heritage Open Days.
This work centred on uncovering local stories, helping visitors understand the significance of the site, and creating space for people to connect with the church in their own way, while respecting it as a living place of worship.
The approach was intentionally gentle, led by the church, and shaped around its existing rhythms of worship and community life.
