Augmented Reality - Safety Use

Last updated July 15th, 2021

With the below points in mind, you should only use Augmented Reality if you feel it is safe to do so.  Remember you are responsible for your own safety, and for the safety of others around you.  You should never use Augmented Reality whilst under the influence of alcohol or any substances, and you should seek proper medical assistance if you believe you are physically impaired from using the audio and visual technology that drives immersive experiences.

AVimmerse Ltd accepts no liability for the use of persons using AR Apps, you do so at your own risk.

1. Don’t Overload

Augmented Reality enables quick action using real-time information. Regulating the amount of data you consume can an issue that causes tiredness, fatigue, and general loss of concentration.  Therefore, before conducting Augmented Reality, it is important that you feel well rested and attentive before taking part in any experience.  Information can overload us, or even cause stress, indecisiveness, and can lead to inaction, which can also lead to loss of or reduction in perception.

Make sure you are well rested before beginning an experience.

2. Perception Impairment - Mitigation

While Augmented Reality uses an overlay technology (sometimes including glasses), as a key component of the technology, it is prone to compromising people’s safety if they are not also paying attention to what is happening around them. AR and AR glasses, and lenses, can potentially cause impairment in the perception of the wearer and may lead to serious consequences depending on the application. Therefore, it is imperative that you must use any device in a safe fashion that does not compromise the safety of yourself, or others around you.  Ensuring the compliance of AR equipment to the highest standards of quality and safety will ensure the use of the technology without subjecting users to the dangers of AR.

Pay attention to your surroundings.

3. Distraction - Avoidance

Augmented Reality can provide us with wow moments that take us out of the present.  And Although AR is capable of delivering valuable information to us, it may also act as a distraction sometimes. You may find that this is a hindrance, rather than an advantage.  Distractions caused by AR can be especially dangerous when used for activities like driving or surgeries. To prevent the dangers of AR-induced distraction, you should only use AR in a comfortable setting, away from hazards, trips, and generally any obstacles (including people) that come into your path.

Focus on what is happening around you at all times!

4. Privacy in Place

AR devices work by capturing the real world, processing it, and then overlaying visual information on top of it, thus we ‘augment’ our reality.  The collection of data is an essential part of AR functionality. AR devices gather data on the users of the devices and the people being viewed through any devices.  This can be an issue for privacy, especially if AR gains mass usage.  AVimmerse does not currently use any third party apps or services to distribute your data, and any collected data will only be used as subject to Apple’s standard data use policy.

We won’t share your data with third parties.

5. Security

Like any other connected technology, AR is vulnerable to security threats and unauthorized access by hacker attacks and malware. These attacks can lead to a denial of service or overlay wrong information, leading to severe, potentially catastrophic consequences. For instance, hacker can misdirect a driver using AR-powered navigation system and cause accidents. Although organizations should be excited at the prospect of using AR for various applications, they should not overlook the real-life dangers of AR. Not addressing the potential hazards associated with the technology at an early stage will lead to major setbacks and complications during the full-scale implementation of the technology and may prove counterproductive to the purpose of AR, which is to make things easier.
